How to Calculate Curtain Track Length (With Cost Examples)

Sheer curtains across a wide living room window

To calculate curtain track length, measure the width of the window opening, then add stack-back space on each side — usually 6 to 12 inches for everyday curtains and more for heavy, lined drapes — so the curtains can open fully clear of the glass. If the window is close to a wall, simply run the track wall to wall. Finally, multiply by the number of layers: a double track needs twice the running feet of a single one.

Here is the method step by step, with the small decisions that make the difference between a track that looks built-in and one that looks like an afterthought.

Step 1: Measure the opening

Measure the full width of the window, including the frame or architrave, with a steel tape. If the window has a sill that projects, measure at the height where the track will sit (at the ceiling or just above the frame), not at the sill — walls in Indian homes are rarely perfectly square.

Step 2: Add space for the curtains to stack

When curtains open, the fabric gathers into a bundle called the stack-back. If the track ends at the window edge, that bundle sits over the glass and blocks light. To avoid it, extend the track beyond the opening:

  • Light sheers: about 6 inches each side.
  • Everyday curtains: about 8 to 12 inches each side.
  • Heavy, lined or blackout drapes: 12 inches or more each side.
  • Ripple fold curtains stack more compactly than pinch pleats, so they need a little less.

If the curtain opens to one side only (a "one-way draw"), add all of the stack-back on that side.

Step 3: Decide where the track should end

If the extended track would end within about a foot of a side wall, run it wall to wall instead. It looks cleaner, avoids an awkward gap that collects dust, and makes the window feel larger. On a long wall with two windows, a single continuous track often looks better than two short ones.

Step 4: Count the layers

  • Single track: one curtain.
  • Double track: sheer plus drape or blackout — twice the running feet.
  • Triple track: sheer, drape and blackout — three times.

Step 5: Check for obstacles

Before finalising the length, check the ceiling and wall along the whole run for split AC units, beams, wardrobe doors, switchboards, sprinklers, smoke detectors and false-ceiling coves or light troughs. A track that runs into an AC unit has to stop short or be routed around it.

From length to cost: worked examples

Curtain tracks at Akhil Interior cost ₹140 to ₹450 per running foot, installation included. Some typical runs:

  • 5 ft bedroom window, 1 ft added on each side: 7 ft of track, about ₹980 to ₹3,150.
  • 8 ft living room window, run wall to wall on an 11 ft wall: about ₹1,540 to ₹4,950.
  • The same 11 ft wall with a double track (sheer + blackout): 22 running feet, about ₹3,080 to ₹9,900.
  • Bay window with three faces of 4 ft, 6 ft and 4 ft: 14 ft of bendable track, about ₹1,960 to ₹6,300; bendable profiles usually sit towards the upper end of the range.

Centre-opening or one-way draw?

Most windows use a centre-opening pair of curtains that meet in the middle. A one-way draw — a single curtain that travels to one side — suits sliding doors, corner windows and walls where furniture sits on one side. It changes where the stack-back goes, so decide this before measuring.

Measuring tips

  • Measure at the actual fixing line, at the ceiling for ceiling-mounted tracks.
  • Note the ceiling type: concrete, gypsum false ceiling or POP. A false ceiling needs a batten or long anchors for fixing.
  • Round up to the nearest half foot when estimating.
  • Photograph each wall with your measurements written on the photo — it helps enormously when comparing quotes.

For a track that glides quietly for years, the fitting matters as much as the profile. Book a free consultation and we'll check your ceiling, recommend brackets and gliders, and quote clearly. Browse our curtain track range.

Frequently asked questions

How much wider than the window should a curtain track be?

Usually 6 to 12 inches on each side for everyday curtains, and 12 inches or more for heavy blackout drapes. This lets the curtains stack clear of the glass when they are open.

Should a curtain track run wall to wall?

If the track would end within about a foot of a side wall, yes. Wall-to-wall tracks look cleaner, avoid dusty gaps and make the window look wider.

How do I measure a curtain track for a bay window?

Measure each face of the bay along the fixing line and add them together, then add stack-back space at the two outer ends. A bendable track can follow the angles as one continuous run.

Is the curtain track length the same as the curtain width?

No. The curtain fabric is wider than the track — usually about two to two-and-a-half times the track length, depending on the heading — so the curtain hangs in full folds when closed.
