Aluminium Curtain Channels: Profiles, Finishes and Uses

Cream curtains in a bright room with a plant on a side table

An aluminium curtain channel is a slim extruded aluminium rail with gliders running inside it, fixed to the ceiling or wall to hang curtains. It is the standard choice in Indian homes and offices because aluminium is rigid, light, rust-free and stays straight over wide spans — so curtains glide smoothly for years, even heavy blackout ones.

Why aluminium?

  • Stiffness: it doesn't sag between brackets the way PVC can.
  • Durability: it doesn't rust or become brittle in strong sun.
  • Smooth running: a precise inner surface lets gliders move with little friction.
  • Finishes: it takes powder-coated and anodised finishes that last.
  • Versatility: the same material is used for compact channels, heavy-duty profiles, ripple fold systems, bendable tracks and motorised tracks.

What makes a good aluminium channel

Not all aluminium channels are equal. Look at:

  1. Wall thickness. Thicker profiles carry more weight with fewer brackets and resist denting.
  2. The running surface. It should be smooth and even, with no burrs at cut ends.
  3. Glider quality. Good gliders run quietly and don't jam; heavy curtains benefit from wheeled or ball-bearing runners.
  4. Brackets. Sturdy, well-designed brackets are what actually hold the load.
  5. End stops. They keep gliders in place and stop the curtain overrunning.

Profile shapes

  • Compact channels for everyday curtains in homes.
  • Larger profiles for heavy, lined and blackout curtains or long spans.
  • Ripple fold profiles with carriers spaced for an even S-wave.
  • Bendable profiles for bay and curved windows.
  • Motor profiles with an internal belt for motorised operation.

Our guide to the types of curtain tracks explains each of these in detail.

Finishes

White powder coating is the most common because it disappears against a white ceiling. Black suits modern interiors and black window frames; silver anodised and champagne or gold tones work with metallic fittings. Match the track to the ceiling if you want it invisible, or to the window frames if it will be seen.

Brackets and spacing

Brackets are typically spaced every 2 to 3 feet, with one close to each end. Heavy curtains, long spans and motorised tracks need closer spacing. On gypsum false ceilings, brackets must fix into a batten or through to the slab — never into the board alone.

How much weight can it carry?

That depends on the profile and how closely the brackets are spaced, rather than on aluminium alone. A sensible rule is to tell your installer what the curtain fabric is — sheer, standard, lined blackout or heavy velvet — so they can choose the profile and bracket spacing to match.

Where aluminium is the right choice

  • Any window wider than about 6 feet.
  • Blackout, lined and heavy curtains.
  • Ceiling-mounted, wall-to-wall runs.
  • Double and triple tracks.
  • Any track you may want to motorise later.

PVC channels still make sense for short windows and light sheers on a tight budget.

What aluminium channels cost

Standard aluminium channels usually sit around the middle of our ₹140 to ₹450 per running foot range, including installation, with heavy-duty and premium finishes towards the upper end. A 10 ft run costs about ₹1,400 to ₹4,500; a 16 ft wall-to-wall run about ₹2,240 to ₹7,200. See our curtain track price guide for more.

Frequently asked questions

Is an aluminium curtain channel better than PVC?

For most windows, yes. Aluminium is stiffer, doesn't sag under heavy curtains, doesn't turn brittle in sunlight and lasts much longer. PVC is fine for light curtains on short windows.

Does an aluminium curtain channel rust?

No. Aluminium doesn't rust, and powder-coated or anodised finishes protect it further, which makes it suitable for humid and coastal homes.

How much weight can an aluminium curtain track hold?

It depends on the profile thickness and bracket spacing. Tell your installer the type of curtain — sheer, lined blackout or heavy velvet — so they can choose the right profile and space the brackets closer if needed.

Can aluminium curtain channels be bent for bay windows?

Special bendable aluminium profiles can be curved to follow bay, corner and curved windows. Standard channels are joined with corner pieces instead.
