Motorised Curtain Tracks: How They Work and What You Need

Beige curtains framing a floor-to-ceiling glass door

A motorised curtain track uses a small electric motor at one end of the track to pull the curtains open and closed along a belt. You control it with a remote, a wall switch, a phone app, a voice assistant or a timer. It is the same curtain and the same kind of track — just without anyone having to pull the fabric.

Motorised tracks are no longer limited to hotels. They are increasingly common on wide living-room windows, double-height glass, home theatres and bedrooms where you want the curtains to open with the morning alarm.

The parts of a motorised track

  • A motor-compatible profile: an aluminium track with a belt running inside it.
  • Carriers and master carriers: the gliders that hold the curtain; the master carriers at the leading edges are attached to the belt and pull the curtain.
  • The motor: fixed at one end of the track, sometimes hidden in a pelmet or ceiling recess.
  • Power: a mains connection for wired motors, or a rechargeable battery on some lighter systems.
  • Controls: remote, wall switch, smart hub or Wi-Fi bridge, depending on the system.

Wired or battery?

Wired motors are the standard for curtain tracks. They need a power point in the ceiling or wall at the motor end, which is easy to plan in a new home or during renovation. Battery-powered curtain motors exist for lighter curtains and retrofits, but they need recharging and are less suited to heavy, wide curtains.

Ways to control it

  • Remote control — one remote can often run several tracks or groups.
  • Wall switch beside the bed or at the room entrance.
  • App control through a hub or Wi-Fi bridge.
  • Voice control with popular assistants once the system is connected.
  • Timers and scenes — for example, open at 7 a.m., close at sunset, or close everything when you leave home.
  • Touch-start on many motors: a gentle tug on the curtain starts the motor in that direction.

Where motorisation makes the most sense

  • Windows wider than about 10 feet, where pulling heavy curtains is tiring.
  • Double-height and hard-to-reach windows.
  • Home theatres and media rooms.
  • Bedrooms, so curtains can open gradually with your alarm.
  • Homes with elderly family members or anyone with limited mobility.
  • Hotels, offices and conference rooms where many curtains are operated together.

What to plan before installation

  1. Power point location at the motor end — ideally concealed above the false ceiling or behind a pelmet.
  2. Fixing support — a batten above any gypsum false ceiling, because a motorised track carries the motor's weight too.
  3. Centre-opening or one-way — decide how the curtains should part.
  4. Motor side — which end the motor sits at, so it is hidden and close to power.
  5. Curtain weight — heavy blackout and lined curtains need a suitably rated motor.
  6. Wi-Fi coverage if you want app or voice control.
  7. Power cuts — ask whether the curtains can be pulled by hand when there's no power; many systems allow it.

What motorised tracks cost

The track is priced per running foot like any other — ₹140 to ₹450 per running foot at Akhil Interior, including installation — with the motor, controls and any hub added as separate items. A 12 ft track works out to about ₹1,680 to ₹5,400 before the motor. Our curtain track price guide explains the per-foot factors in more detail.

Maintenance

Motorised tracks need very little care: keep the track free of dust, avoid forcing the curtain by hand while the motor is running, and have the belt tension checked if the curtains start to stop short.

Frequently asked questions

How do motorised curtain tracks work?

A motor at one end of the track drives a belt inside the profile. The leading carriers of each curtain are attached to the belt, so when the motor runs, the curtains open or close.

Do motorised curtains need wiring?

Most motorised curtain tracks use a wired motor that needs a power point near the motor end. Some lighter systems use rechargeable battery motors that need no wiring.

Can I motorise my existing curtain track?

Usually the track itself needs replacing with a motor-compatible profile with a belt. Your existing curtains can often be reused if their heading suits the new carriers.

Do motorised curtains work during a power cut?

Wired motors stop when there's no power, but many systems let you pull the curtains by hand in the meantime. Ask about manual override when choosing a motor.
