Curtain Track vs Curtain Rod: Which Should You Choose?
Choose a curtain track if you want curtains that glide smoothly, hide the hardware, block light at the top, carry two or three layers, follow a bay window or be motorised. Choose a curtain rod if the hardware itself is part of the look — a brass or wooden pole with decorative finials — and you are hanging a single layer of eyelet or ring-top curtains on a straight window.
Most new Indian homes now use tracks, but rods still have their place. Here is how they compare point by point.
The basic difference
A rod (or pole) is a round bar fixed on brackets; curtains hang from rings, eyelets or tabs threaded onto it. A track is a slim rail, usually aluminium or PVC, with small gliders running inside it; curtains hang from hooks clipped to the gliders.
Looks
- Rods are decorative. The finish, thickness and finials are visible and become part of the room's style — great for traditional, classic or eclectic interiors.
- Tracks are minimal. Ceiling-mounted or recessed into a false ceiling, they practically disappear, leaving only the curtain on show.
How the curtain moves
Rings and eyelets slide on a rod, but they can catch, especially on long or heavy curtains. Gliders run inside a track with much less friction, so curtains open and close with a light pull. Tracks can also have overlap arms so the two halves meet neatly in the centre without a gap.
Light control
A rod sits on brackets in front of the wall, leaving a gap above the curtain where light spills in. A ceiling-mounted track has no gap at the top — a big advantage in bedrooms with blackout curtains.
Layers
A double rod is bulky and the back rod is hard to reach. A double or triple track is slim and each layer moves independently — the standard way to combine a sheer with a blackout curtain.
Bay, corner and curved windows
Rods need elbow joints at each corner, and rings can't pass the brackets. Bendable tracks follow the curve or angle as one continuous run.
Span and weight
A long rod sags in the middle unless it has a centre bracket — and ordinary rings can't pass a centre bracket. Tracks are supported by brackets every couple of feet and gliders pass them without trouble, so wide spans are easy.
Motorisation
Tracks can be motorised for remote, app or voice control. Rods, with very few exceptions, cannot.
Cost
Curtain tracks at Akhil Interior cost ₹140 to ₹450 per running foot, installed. A 10 ft track works out to about ₹1,400 to ₹4,500. Rods vary widely: a plain rod can cost less than a track, while designer poles with decorative finials can cost as much or more. For detail on track pricing, see our curtain track price guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is a curtain track better than a curtain rod?
For function, usually yes: tracks glide more smoothly, block light at the top when ceiling-mounted, handle layers and curves, and can be motorised. Rods are better when you want decorative hardware on show.
Can I use eyelet curtains on a curtain track?
Eyelet curtains are designed for rods. For tracks, curtains are made with hook-based headings such as pinch pleat, pencil pleat or ripple fold. Existing eyelet curtains can often be restitched with a new heading.
Do curtain tracks look good in living rooms?
Yes. Ceiling-mounted or recessed tracks give a clean, modern look where the curtains fall straight from the ceiling, which makes the room feel taller.
Which is cheaper, a curtain rod or a curtain track?
A basic rod can cost less than a track, but designer rods with finials often cost as much or more. Tracks at Akhil Interior cost ₹140 to ₹450 per running foot, including installation.
