How to Calculate the Cost of Window Blinds for Your Home
The cost of a window blind is its area in square feet multiplied by the rate per square foot. Area is width × height in feet. At Akhil Interior the rate is ₹130 to ₹350 per sq ft, including installation, depending on the type of blind and fabric. So a 4 × 5 ft window (20 sq ft) costs about ₹2,600 to ₹7,000. For the rate of each blind type, see our guide to window blinds price per sq ft.
Below are worked examples for the different ways people measure — feet, inches and centimetres — plus how overlaps and minimum sizes change the numbers.
The formula
- Area (sq ft) = width (ft) × height (ft)
- Cost = area × rate per sq ft
- Inches to feet: divide by 12.
- Centimetres to feet: divide by 30.48.
- When estimating, round the area up to the next whole square foot.
Example 1: measured in inches
A bedroom window measures 46 inches wide and 58 inches high.
- Width: 46 ÷ 12 = 3.83 ft
- Height: 58 ÷ 12 = 4.83 ft
- Area: 3.83 × 4.83 = 18.5 sq ft, rounded up to 19 sq ft
- Cost: 19 × ₹130 to 19 × ₹350 = ₹2,470 to ₹6,650
Example 2: measured in centimetres
A study window measures 120 cm by 150 cm.
- Width: 120 ÷ 30.48 = 3.94 ft
- Height: 150 ÷ 30.48 = 4.92 ft
- Area: 19.4 sq ft, rounded up to 20 sq ft
- Cost: ₹2,600 to ₹7,000
Example 3: an outside-mounted blind
For an outside mount, the blind is bigger than the opening because it overlaps the wall. Take an opening of 48 × 60 inches:
- Add 4 inches each side to the width: 56 inches (4.67 ft)
- Add 4 inches above and 2 inches below to the height: 66 inches (5.5 ft)
- Area: 4.67 × 5.5 = 25.7 sq ft, rounded up to 26 sq ft
- Cost: ₹3,380 to ₹9,100
That's about 30% more area than the opening alone — worth knowing when you compare quotes. Our measuring guide explains when an outside mount is worth it.
Example 4: a whole 2BHK flat
- Living room: 6 × 5 ft = 30 sq ft
- Master bedroom: 5 × 5 ft = 25 sq ft
- Second bedroom: 4 × 5 ft = 20 sq ft
- Kitchen: 3 × 3 ft = 9 sq ft
- Two bathroom windows: 2 × 2 ft each = 8 sq ft
Total: 92 sq ft, or about ₹11,960 to ₹32,200 for the whole flat, depending on the blinds chosen for each room. Mixing types is normal — blackout rollers in bedrooms, zebra in the living room, PVC or aluminium in the kitchen and bathrooms.
Why your quote may differ from your estimate
- Minimum chargeable size. Very small windows, such as bathroom ventilators, may be charged at a minimum area by some suppliers. Ask whether this applies.
- Rounding. Makers usually round sizes up to the nearest inch or centimetre.
- Overlaps and mounting. Outside and ceiling mounts increase the area.
- Mechanism and extras. Motors, side channels and cassettes are often priced separately.
- Type and fabric. The same window can sit at the low or high end of the range depending on what you choose — see our guide to the types of window blinds.
A quick estimating checklist
- List every window by room.
- Measure width and height in inches (three measurements each; use the narrowest width and largest height for inside mounts).
- Decide inside or outside mount for each.
- Convert to sq ft and round up.
- Pick a type per room and apply the low and high rates to get a range.
- Add motors or extras as separate lines.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the price of blinds per square foot?
Multiply the width by the height in feet to get the area, then multiply by the rate. For example, a 5 × 6 ft window is 30 sq ft; at ₹130 to ₹350 per sq ft it costs about ₹3,900 to ₹10,500, including installation.
Should I use the window size or the blind size?
Use the blind size. For an inside mount that is the recess size; for an outside mount it includes the overlap around the opening, which makes the blind larger than the window.
Are blinds in India measured in feet or inches?
Prices are quoted per square foot, but windows are usually measured in inches for accuracy and then converted to feet. Centimetres work too — divide by 30.48 to get feet.
Is there a minimum size for blinds pricing?
Some suppliers charge very small blinds at a minimum area. Always ask whether a minimum applies, especially for bathroom and ventilator windows.
