Zebra Blinds (Day-Night Blinds): The Complete Guide

Sunlight falling in stripes through a window blind onto a wall

Zebra blinds — also called day-night, vision or dual blinds — are roller blinds made from a continuous loop of fabric with alternating sheer and solid horizontal bands. When the sheer bands line up, you can see out and daylight streams in; move the blind slightly so the solid bands overlap the sheer ones, and you get privacy. Roll it up completely and the window is fully clear.

They have become one of the most requested blinds in Indian living rooms because they combine the softness of fabric with precise light control.

How zebra blinds work

The fabric hangs in two layers, one behind the other, joined in a loop around the tube and the bottom bar. Each layer has the same pattern of sheer and solid stripes. Turning the chain shifts one layer relative to the other:

  • Open position: sheer over sheer — maximum light and view.
  • Closed position: solid over sheer — privacy and reduced light.
  • Anywhere in between: fine-tuned light, much like tilting venetian slats.

Fabric choices that matter

  • Band width: narrow bands look subtle and modern; wider bands make a bolder statement.
  • Texture: plain polyester, linen-look weaves and woodgrain-look prints are all common.
  • Light level: standard zebra fabric gives good privacy but not darkness. Blackout zebra fabric uses blackout solid bands for much darker rooms.
  • Colour: light colours keep rooms bright and reflect heat; greys, taupes and charcoals hide dust and suit modern interiors.

Advantages

  • Light control in small steps, without lifting the blind.
  • Daytime privacy with an outside view.
  • Soft, fabric look that suits homes better than metal slats.
  • Clean lines — the blind sits close to the window without bulky folds.
  • Can be motorised for tall or hard-to-reach windows.

Disadvantages

  • Not full blackout unless you choose blackout bands — even then, some light passes through the sheer stripes when open.
  • Dust settles on the top edge of each solid band, so they need a quick vacuum every week or two in dusty cities.
  • The roll is thicker than a standard roller blind because it carries two layers; a cassette hides it neatly.
  • They usually cost more than a standard roller blind in the same size.

The best rooms for zebra blinds

  • Living rooms: the classic use — privacy from neighbours without losing daylight.
  • Bedrooms: with blackout bands, or paired with blackout curtains for sleep.
  • Home offices: set the bands to cut screen glare while keeping some view.
  • Dining areas and study rooms: soft light for daytime use.

Avoid them directly beside a gas hob (grease) or in a steamy bathroom; PVC or aluminium blinds are better there.

Cassette or open roll?

A cassette is a slim box that covers the rolled fabric at the top. It keeps dust off the roll, hides the tube and gives a finished look — worth it for living rooms. An open roll costs less and suits recessed windows where the roll is out of sight.

What zebra blinds cost

Zebra blinds usually land in the middle of our ₹130 to ₹350 per sq ft range, including installation; blackout bands, textured fabrics and cassettes add to the price. A 5 × 5 ft window is 25 sq ft, which works out to about ₹3,250 to ₹8,750. See our window blinds price guide for more examples, and our overview of types of window blinds to compare alternatives.

Cleaning zebra blinds

  • Lower the blind into the open position so both layers are flat.
  • Vacuum with a soft brush attachment from top to bottom.
  • Spot-clean marks with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soap.
  • Don't soak, scrub or machine-wash the fabric.

Frequently asked questions

What are zebra blinds?

Zebra blinds are roller blinds with two layers of fabric in alternating sheer and solid stripes. Shifting the layers lets you switch between view and privacy without raising the blind.

Are zebra blinds good for bedrooms?

Yes, if you choose blackout bands or pair them with blackout curtains. Standard zebra fabric gives privacy but lets some light through, which is not ideal for daytime sleep.

Do zebra blinds give privacy at night?

In the closed position, yes — the solid bands cover the sheer ones. In the open position, people outside can see in when your lights are on, so close them after dark.

Are zebra blinds better than roller blinds?

Zebra blinds are more flexible for daytime light and privacy; roller blinds are simpler, slightly slimmer and better for full blackout. Many homes use zebra in the living room and blackout rollers in the bedrooms.
