How Window Blinds Are Installed: Brackets, Walls and Ceilings
Installing a window blind follows a simple sequence: check the blind against the window and the fixing surface, mark level bracket positions, drill and fix the brackets, clip the blind in, fit the child-safety devices, then adjust and test it. Done well, the blind hangs perfectly level, runs smoothly and stops exactly where it should.
Before installation day
- Your blinds are made to measure, so the installer arrives with each blind labelled for its window.
- Clear the sills and move furniture away from the windows.
- For motorised blinds, make sure power points are ready (wired) or the motors are charged (battery).
- Decide which side you want the chain or cord on, if you haven't already.
Step 1: Check the fit and the surface
The installer confirms each blind matches its window and checks what the brackets will fix into — concrete, brick, gypsum, wood or the window frame itself — to choose the right plugs and screws.
Step 2: Mark the bracket positions
Brackets are marked a short distance in from each end of the blind, with extra brackets along wide blinds. A spirit level or laser ensures the marks are perfectly level, because a blind installed even slightly off-level will roll unevenly.
Step 3: Drill and fix the brackets
- Concrete and brick: drilled and plugged.
- Gypsum false ceiling: fixed into a batten above the board or with suitable anchors.
- Wood: screwed directly.
- Aluminium and uPVC frames: short screws or special brackets that clip to the frame, so the frame isn't damaged.
Step 4: Fit the blind
The blind is clipped or slotted into the brackets. Cassettes, pelmets and side channels are fitted at this stage.
Step 5: Fit the safety devices
Chain tensioners, cord cleats or cord tidies are fixed within reach of adults but out of reach of children. This is an essential step in any home with young children.
Step 6: Adjust and test
The installer checks the bottom bar is level, the fabric rolls straight, the slats tilt fully, and the blind stops at the right height. Motorised blinds have their limits set and remotes paired.
Step 7: The hand-over
You'll be shown how to operate each blind and how to clean it without damage.
Inside, outside and ceiling mounts
- Inside mount: brackets fix to the top of the recess; the blind sits within the window opening.
- Outside mount: brackets fix to the wall above the opening; the blind overlaps the edges.
- Ceiling mount: brackets fix to the ceiling, useful above full-height glass.

How long does it take?
A standard blind is usually installed quickly, and a whole home is typically done in a single visit. Heavy wooden blinds, very wide blinds, motorised systems and glass partitions take longer.
DIY or professional?
A light roller blind on a concrete recess is manageable for a confident DIYer. Heavy wooden blinds, wide blinds, motorised systems, false ceilings and glass-partition fittings are better left to professionals — a crooked or loose blind is the most common installation complaint.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to install blinds?
A standard blind is usually installed quickly, and most homes are completed in one visit. Motorised, very wide and heavy wooden blinds take a little longer.
Can blinds be installed without drilling?
Some blinds can be fixed with brackets that clip onto window frames, but most blinds need a few small screws. Drilling gives the most secure and level fit.
Can blinds be fixed on a gypsum false ceiling?
Yes, if there is a batten above the gypsum or suitable anchors are used. Gypsum board alone may not hold a heavy blind securely.
Is installation included in the price of blinds?
Yes. Our ₹130 to ₹350 per sq ft price includes installation. Motors and wiring are quoted separately.
