Best Blinds for Living Rooms: Light, Privacy and Style

Double-height living room with white blinds on tall windows

For most Indian living rooms, zebra blinds are the best all-rounder: they let you switch between daylight with a view and privacy from neighbours in one movement. Sunscreen roller blinds are better if glare on the TV is your main problem, wooden blinds if you want warmth and texture, and roman blinds if you want the softness of fabric. For very wide windows and balcony doors, consider vertical blinds or motorised blinds.

What a living room blind has to do

  • Let in plenty of daylight — it's the room you use most during the day.
  • Control glare on the TV and on glossy floors.
  • Give privacy from facing flats, balconies and the street.
  • Look good, because it's the room guests see.
  • Handle large windows and balcony doors.

Alternating sheer and solid bands give you fine control: open for view and light, offset for privacy. They look soft and modern and suit almost every style. Read our zebra blinds guide.

Sunscreen roller blinds: for glare and views

Sunscreen fabrics cut glare and heat while keeping the outside view. Lower openness factors (1–3%) control glare better; higher ones (5%) keep more view. Darker sunscreen colours generally give a clearer view out and less glare than white ones. Remember: at night, with lights on, people can see in — pair them with curtains.

Wooden blinds: warmth and character

Wooden slats bring natural texture and let you angle light up towards the ceiling for a soft, bright room without glare. They pair beautifully with floor-length curtains. Read our wooden blinds guide.

Roman blinds: softness and colour

If you love fabric, a roman blind brings pattern and texture without the volume of curtains. Best on windows of moderate width. See our roman blinds guide.

Vertical blinds for wide glass

On sliding balcony doors and wide glass walls, vertical blinds slide clear of the door and handle widths that would make a single roller blind heavy. Soft fabric louvres keep them homely. Read the vertical blinds guide.

Solving TV glare

  • Identify which window throws light onto the screen at the time you watch.
  • Use a dim-out or 1–3% sunscreen fabric on that window.
  • On large glass, motorised blinds let you lower the right blind without getting up.

Large windows and balcony doors

  • Split wide windows into two or three blinds so each runs smoothly and you can open sections independently.
  • Use vertical blinds or a curtain track on sliding doors you walk through often.
  • Motorise tall or hard-to-reach blinds.

Layering with curtains

A blind for daytime control plus floor-length curtains for evening warmth is the classic living-room combination. Mount the blind inside the recess and the curtain on a ceiling track in front.

Colour tips

  • Match blinds to the wall colour for a calm, built-in look, or to the curtains for a coordinated one.
  • Neutral greys, beiges and taupes hide dust and suit most interiors.
  • Keep living-room blinds in the same colour family across all windows.

What living room blinds cost

Living room windows are usually larger, so the total adds up faster. At ₹130 to ₹350 per sq ft including installation, a 5 × 6 ft window (30 sq ft) costs about ₹3,900 to ₹10,500, and an 8 × 5 ft window (40 sq ft) about ₹5,200 to ₹14,000. See our window blinds price guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which blinds are best for a living room?

Zebra blinds are the most popular choice because they balance daylight and privacy. Sunscreen rollers are better for glare and views, wooden blinds for warmth, and roman blinds for soft fabric style.

How do I reduce TV glare from a window?

Use a dim-out or low-openness (1–3%) sunscreen blind on the window that throws light onto the screen. Darker sunscreen colours reduce glare more effectively than white.

Can I use blinds on living room balcony doors?

Yes. Vertical blinds are the most practical because they slide clear of the door. A roller or zebra blind can also work if it's mounted high enough to clear the door frame when raised.

Should living room blinds match the curtains?

They don't need to match exactly, but they should coordinate. Choose blinds in a neutral that picks up a colour from the curtains, or match the blinds to the wall for a calm look.
