Motorised Blinds: How They Work and Who Needs Them

Grey roller blinds over large windows in a city apartment living room

Motorised blinds have a small electric motor that raises and lowers them — or tilts and draws them — at the press of a button, a tap in an app, a voice command or on a timer. They are most useful on tall, wide or hard-to-reach windows, in homes with many windows, and for anyone who wants their blinds to open and close by themselves.

How motorised blinds work

  • In roller, zebra and similar blinds, a slim tubular motor sits inside the roller tube, so it's invisible.
  • In roman, vertical and some other blinds, the motor sits in the headrail.
  • After installation, the upper and lower limits are programmed so the blind always stops in exactly the right place.

Blinds that can be motorised

Roller, zebra, roman, vertical, honeycomb and skylight blinds are all commonly motorised. Wooden and venetian blinds can be motorised too, but the options are more limited — check during the site visit.

Battery or wired?

  • Battery (rechargeable) motors need no wiring, which makes them ideal for finished homes. They are recharged, usually with a cable, every few months depending on how often the blind moves. They also keep working during power cuts.
  • Wired motors connect to the mains or a low-voltage supply. They never need charging and suit large, heavy blinds and windows used many times a day — but they need a power point near the headrail, planned before painting or false-ceiling work. During power cuts they need inverter backup.

Ways to control them

  • Remote control — multi-channel remotes can run one blind, a room or the whole home.
  • Wall switches, often by the door or bedside.
  • App control through a hub or Wi-Fi bridge.
  • Voice control with popular assistants once connected.
  • Timers and scenes — open at sunrise, close at sunset, lower west-facing blinds at 2 p.m.
  • Group control — "all living-room blinds down" in one tap.

When motorised blinds are worth it

  • Tall and double-height windows you can't reach.
  • Windows behind furniture, beds or kitchen counters.
  • Homes with many windows, where one button saves a daily walk-around.
  • Elderly family members and anyone with limited mobility.
  • Child safety, because there are no cords or chains.
  • Heat control while you're out — close sun-facing blinds automatically in summer afternoons.
  • Privacy schedules — blinds close at dusk even when you're late home.

When manual is fine

A small window you open once in the morning and close once at night doesn't need a motor. Most homes motorise selectively: the living room glass, the master bedroom and any hard-to-reach windows.

Planning tips

  1. Decide on motorisation before finishing walls and ceilings if you want wired motors.
  2. Check Wi-Fi coverage at the windows if you want app or voice control.
  3. Choose quiet motors for bedrooms.
  4. Think about power cuts: battery motors keep working; wired motors need backup.
  5. Agree which side the motor sits on so it is hidden and close to power.

What motorised blinds cost

The blind itself is priced within our ₹130 to ₹350 per sq ft range, including installation; the motor, controls and any hub are added as separate items. For a tall 6 × 8 ft window (48 sq ft), the blind costs about ₹6,240 to ₹16,800 before the motor. See our window blinds price guide and types of window blinds. If you're automating curtains too, read our motorised curtain tracks guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which blinds can be motorised?

Roller, zebra, roman, vertical, honeycomb and skylight blinds are commonly motorised. Wooden and venetian blinds can also be motorised, though options are more limited.

Do motorised blinds need wiring?

Not necessarily. Rechargeable battery motors need no wiring at all. Wired motors need a power point near the top of the window, which is easiest to plan before painting or false-ceiling work.

Do motorised blinds work during power cuts?

Battery-powered blinds keep working normally. Wired blinds stop unless the circuit is on inverter backup.

Can I control motorised blinds with Alexa or Google Assistant?

Yes, when the motors are connected through a compatible hub or Wi-Fi bridge. You can then use voice commands, app control and automated schedules.
