How Curtain Tracks Are Installed: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
A professional curtain track installation follows the same basic sequence every time: check what the ceiling or wall is made of, mark a straight fixing line, drill and plug the holes, fix the brackets, cut and fit the track, load the gliders and end stops, hang the curtains and test them. Done properly, the track sits perfectly straight and the curtains glide with a light pull.
Here is what happens at each step — and how you can prepare so the job goes smoothly.
Before the installer arrives
- Decide ceiling or wall mounting and whether the track runs wall to wall.
- Confirm the track type — single, double, ripple fold or motorised.
- Have curtains ready, or at least their heading type decided, so the right gliders are fitted.
- Clear furniture from under the windows and cover anything delicate.
- For motorised tracks, make sure the power point is in place near the motor end.
- For false ceilings, confirm that a batten was installed along the track line.
Step 1: Check the surface
The installer checks whether the fixing surface is concrete, brick, gypsum, POP or wood, and chooses the plugs, anchors and screws to match. On a gypsum false ceiling, fixings must go into the batten above or through to the slab.
Step 2: Mark the line
Using a laser level or chalk line, the installer marks a perfectly straight line at the chosen distance from the wall — usually a few inches, so curtains clear the window frame and handles. For double tracks, both lines are marked parallel.
Step 3: Drill and plug
Holes are drilled at the bracket positions and fitted with suitable plugs or anchors. A good installer checks for hidden electrical conduits in the slab and keeps dust to a minimum.
Step 4: Fix the brackets
Brackets are fixed every 2 to 3 feet, with one close to each end. Heavy curtains, long runs and motorised tracks get closer spacing.
Step 5: Cut and fit the track
The profile is cut to length, the cut ends are smoothed so gliders run freely, and the track is clipped or screwed onto the brackets. Bendable tracks are shaped to the bay or curve at this stage.
Step 6: Load gliders and accessories
Gliders (runners) are inserted — enough for the curtain heading — followed by end stops, and overlap arms or master carriers if the curtains meet in the centre.
Step 7: Hang the curtains
Hooks are inserted into the curtain heading and attached to the gliders. The installer checks that the hem clears the floor evenly and adjusts hooks if needed.
Step 8: Test and tidy
The curtains are opened and closed several times to check for smooth running, even stacking and a clean centre overlap. Finally, the dust is cleaned up.
Extra steps for motorised tracks
For motorised systems, the installer also mounts the motor, connects power, sets the open and close limits, and pairs the remote, wall switch or app.
How long does it take?
A single straight track is usually installed quickly — often within an hour or so. A whole home with several windows, double tracks or motorised systems usually takes longer, and bay windows and false ceilings add time.
DIY or professional?
A simple wall-mounted track on a short window can be a DIY job if you have a drill and a level. For ceiling tracks, false ceilings, long runs, heavy curtains, bay windows and motorised systems, professional installation is worth it — a crooked or poorly fixed track is hard to correct later.
What installation costs
At Akhil Interior, installation is included in the track price of ₹140 to ₹450 per running foot. A 12 ft track costs about ₹1,680 to ₹5,400 supplied and installed. See our guides to ceiling-mounted tracks, track length and track prices.
For a track that glides quietly for years, the fitting matters as much as the profile. Book a free consultation and we'll check your ceiling, recommend brackets and gliders, and quote clearly. Browse our curtain track range.
Frequently asked questions
How long does curtain track installation take?
A single straight track is usually quick to install, often within an hour or so. Double, bay, false-ceiling and motorised tracks take longer, and a whole home is typically done in one visit.
Can curtain tracks be installed on a false ceiling?
Yes, if there is a wooden or plywood batten above the gypsum along the track line, or if long anchors can reach the slab. Gypsum board alone cannot hold a loaded track.
Do I need my curtains ready before the track is installed?
It helps. The installer can then fit the right number and type of gliders and hang the curtains straight away. If curtains come later, share the heading type in advance.
Is installation included in the curtain track price?
At Akhil Interior, yes. Our ₹140 to ₹450 per running foot price includes installation; motors, electrical work and false-ceiling reinforcement are quoted separately.
