Venetian Blinds: Aluminium, Wood and Faux Wood Explained

Aluminium venetian blinds against a bright sky

Venetian blinds are blinds made of horizontal slats held together by ladder cords. You tilt the slats to control light and lift the whole stack to clear the window. They come in aluminium (typically 25 mm slats), real wood and faux wood (typically 50 mm slats), and they are among the most practical blinds for kitchens, bathrooms, studies and offices.

How venetian blinds work

  • Headrail: the box at the top that holds the tilt and lift mechanisms.
  • Slats: hang on ladder cords or decorative tapes.
  • Tilt control: a wand or cord that rotates every slat at once.
  • Lift cord: raises and lowers the stack, locking at any height.
  • Bottom rail: keeps the blind straight; hold-down brackets stop it swinging on doors.

Aluminium venetian blinds

Aluminium venetians are slim, light and moisture-resistant, and they come in dozens of colours, including metallic and matt finishes.

  • Best for: kitchens, bathrooms, offices, cabins and study rooms.
  • Advantages: wipe clean, don't warp in humidity, affordable, very slim when raised.
  • Watch out for: slats can dent if handled roughly.

Wooden venetian blinds

Real wood slats bring warmth and a premium look to living rooms, bedrooms and studies, but should be kept away from steam and splashes. Our wooden blinds guide covers them in detail.

Faux wood venetian blinds

Faux wood (PVC or composite) looks like wood but handles moisture. It is the smart choice for kitchens, bathrooms and humid rooms where you still want a wood look. It is heavier than real wood, so very wide windows should be split.

Which slat size?

  • Narrow slats suit small windows and windows close to handles.
  • 25 mm aluminium slats are the everyday standard and work on most windows.
  • 50 mm wood or faux wood slats give a bigger view when open and a more substantial look on larger windows.

Light control and privacy

The big advantage of venetian blinds is angle. Tilt the slats so light bounces up towards the ceiling and the room fills with soft, indirect daylight without glare on screens or worktops. Close them fully for privacy. They don't give total darkness, because light passes through the small cord holes and between the slats.

The best rooms for venetian blinds

  • Kitchens: aluminium or faux wood shrug off steam and wipe clean.
  • Bathrooms: aluminium or faux wood for privacy with ventilation.
  • Studies and home offices: angle the slats to stop screen glare.
  • Offices and cabins: neat, professional and easy to maintain.

Bedrooms that need darkness are better served by blackout roller blinds or a venetian paired with a blackout curtain.

Child safety

Choose cord cleats mounted high, cord tensioners or cordless and wand-operated versions in homes with small children.

Cleaning venetian blinds

  • Close the slats and dust one side with a microfibre cloth or duster, then close them the other way and repeat.
  • Aluminium and faux wood slats can be wiped with a cloth dampened with mild soapy water.
  • Use a barely damp cloth on real wood and dry it immediately.

What venetian blinds cost

Aluminium venetians usually land around the middle of our ₹130 to ₹350 per sq ft range; wooden venetians sit towards the top. A 3 × 4 ft kitchen window (12 sq ft) costs about ₹1,560 to ₹4,200, and a 4 × 5 ft study window (20 sq ft) about ₹2,600 to ₹7,000. Frequently asked questions

Are venetian blinds good for kitchens?

Yes. Aluminium and faux wood venetian blinds handle steam and heat, wipe clean easily and let you angle light onto the worktop without glare.

Should I choose aluminium or wooden venetian blinds?

Choose aluminium for kitchens, bathrooms and offices where practicality matters most, and wood for living rooms, bedrooms and studies where warmth and style matter more. Faux wood gives a wood look for humid rooms.

Do venetian blinds give privacy?

Yes, when the slats are closed. During the day you can angle them to let light in while making it hard to see in. They do not give full blackout.

How do I clean venetian blinds?

Close the slats and dust each side with a microfibre cloth. Aluminium and faux wood can be wiped with mild soapy water; real wood should only be wiped with a barely damp cloth and dried at once.
