Vertical Blinds: Best Uses, Fabrics and Buying Tips

Vertical blinds with brown and white fabric louvres

Vertical blinds are made of vertical strips called louvres that hang from a track at the top. The louvres rotate to let light in or block it, and slide sideways to open the window completely. Because the width is carried by a track rather than a roll of fabric, they handle very wide openings — sliding doors, glass walls and long office windows — better than almost any other blind.

How vertical blinds work

  • A headrail (track) holds small carriers that each hang one louvre.
  • A wand or cord rotates all the louvres together through about 180 degrees.
  • The same control draws the louvres to one side, both sides or the centre.
  • Bottom weights and a connecting chain keep the louvres straight and evenly spaced.

Fabric or PVC louvres?

  • Fabric louvres (usually polyester) look softer and come in translucent, dim-out and blackout grades and many textures. They suit homes, offices and conference rooms.
  • PVC louvres are rigid and wipeable, and handle moisture. They suit kitchens, clinics, utility areas and commercial spaces that need frequent cleaning.

Louvre widths

Louvres commonly come in about 89 mm (3.5 inch) and 127 mm (5 inch) widths. Narrower louvres look lighter and suit homes; wider louvres look bolder and suit large commercial windows.

Choosing how they stack

  • Left or right stack: all louvres gather at one side — ideal for a sliding door that opens one way.
  • Centre split: louvres part in the middle and stack at both sides — balanced for windows.
  • Centre stack: louvres gather in the middle — useful for windows between two doors.

Choose the stack so the louvres never block the part of the door you walk through.

Why they suit wide openings

  • One continuous headrail can span a wide opening without the weight of a huge fabric roll.
  • Louvres slide clear of sliding doors, so you can walk through easily.
  • A damaged louvre can be replaced individually.

The best places for vertical blinds

  • Sliding balcony doors and French windows.
  • Office windows, cabins and conference rooms.
  • Wide living-room windows and glass walls.
  • Shops, clinics and reception areas.

The downsides

  • A more commercial look than roller or zebra blinds — soft, textured fabrics help a lot at home.
  • Louvres can sway when a window is open; the bottom chain and weights reduce this.
  • The stack takes up some width at the side when open.
  • Not full blackout, because light passes between the louvres even with blackout fabric.

Light control and privacy

Rotate the louvres half-open to let in light while blocking direct views, or close them fully for privacy. Turning them to face slightly away from the street keeps people from looking in while you still see out at an angle.

Caring for vertical blinds

  • Vacuum louvres gently with a brush attachment, holding the bottom weight.
  • Unclip individual fabric louvres for spot cleaning.
  • Wipe PVC louvres with a damp cloth and mild soap.

What vertical blinds cost

Vertical blinds usually sit in the lower to middle part of our ₹130 to ₹350 per sq ft range, including installation. A 6 × 7 ft sliding door (42 sq ft) costs about ₹5,460 to ₹14,700; a 10 × 5 ft office window (50 sq ft) about ₹6,500 to ₹17,500. Frequently asked questions

Are vertical blinds good for homes?

Yes, especially for sliding doors and wide windows. Choosing a soft, textured fabric louvre in a warm colour gives them a homely rather than office-like look.

Are vertical blinds good for sliding doors?

They are one of the best options: the louvres slide clear of the door so you can walk through, and one headrail spans the full opening.

Should I choose fabric or PVC vertical blinds?

Choose fabric for living rooms, bedrooms and offices where looks and softness matter, and PVC for kitchens, clinics and utility areas where you need to wipe them clean.

Can vertical blinds be motorised?

Yes. Motorised vertical blind headrails can rotate and draw the louvres by remote or app, which is useful on very wide glass walls and in conference rooms.
