Roller vs Zebra Blinds: Which Should You Choose?

Soft daylight through white horizontal blinds

Choose a zebra blind if you want to adjust light and keep daytime privacy without lifting the blind — ideal for living rooms. Choose a roller blind if you want the darkest room for the money, the simplest look and the easiest cleaning — ideal for bedrooms, kitchens and offices. Many homes use both.

How each one works

A roller blind is a single sheet of fabric that rolls up or down. It is either up, down or somewhere in between, and the fabric decides how much light passes through.

A zebra blind is a double layer of fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands. Shifting the layers lines the sheer bands up (view and light) or offsets them (privacy), without raising the blind.

Light control

Zebra wins. You can fine-tune the light in small steps, a bit like tilting venetian slats. A roller blind only controls light by how far down it is — unless you choose a sunscreen fabric, which filters glare while keeping the view.

Darkness

Roller wins. A blackout roller blind blocks light through the fabric completely. Even blackout zebra blinds let a little light through the sheer bands, so for daytime sleep and media rooms, a blackout roller is better.

Privacy with a view

Zebra wins during the day — set the bands partly open and you can see out while passers-by see little. A sunscreen roller does something similar. At night, with lights on inside, both need to be fully closed for privacy.

Looks

Roller blinds are minimal and flat — good for modern rooms and for showing off prints. Zebra blinds have a textured, striped look that feels softer and more decorative.

Dust and cleaning

Roller wins. A flat roller blind is quick to vacuum or wipe. The bands of a zebra blind catch dust on their top edges and need a little more care.

Durability

Both are durable when made with good fabric and mechanisms. A roller blind is mechanically simpler; a zebra blind's fabric loop must stay aligned, so quality manufacturing matters more.

Price

Zebra blinds usually cost more than standard roller blinds because they use a double layer of fabric. Both fall within our ₹130 to ₹350 per sq ft range, including installation — rollers towards the lower part, zebra around the middle. For a 25 sq ft window, the full range is ₹3,250 to ₹8,750. Room-by-room verdict

  • Living room: zebra, for daytime privacy and soft light.
  • Master bedroom: blackout roller, or zebra with blackout bands plus curtains.
  • Kids' room: blackout roller with a child-safe mechanism.
  • Kitchen: roller in a wipeable fabric (or aluminium/PVC near the hob).
  • Home office: sunscreen roller or zebra, to cut screen glare.
  • Office and conference room: sunscreen and blackout rollers.

Can you mix them?

Absolutely. Using zebra blinds in the living and dining areas and blackout rollers in bedrooms is one of the most common — and sensible — combinations. Choose the same colour family throughout to keep the home looking consistent. Read our roller blinds guide and zebra blinds guide for more detail on each.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, roller or zebra blinds?

Neither is better everywhere. Zebra blinds are better for flexible daytime light and privacy; roller blinds are better for darkness, simplicity and easy cleaning.

Usually, yes, because zebra blinds use a double layer of fabric. Both fall within our ₹130 to ₹350 per sq ft range including installation.

Which gives more privacy, roller or zebra blinds?

Both give full privacy when closed. During the day, zebra blinds let you keep some view while maintaining privacy, which a standard roller blind can't do.

Roller blinds. Their flat fabric is quick to vacuum or wipe, while zebra blinds collect dust along the top edge of each band.
