Installing Curtain Tracks on a False Ceiling: What to Plan

Cream curtains in a bright room with a plant on a side table

A gypsum or POP false ceiling can't hold a loaded curtain track on its own — the screws would eventually pull out of the board. The track needs a wooden or plywood batten fixed above the board along the track line, anchors that reach the concrete slab, or a recessed pocket built into the ceiling. All three are easiest to plan before the false ceiling is closed.

Why gypsum alone isn't enough

Gypsum board is designed to hold its own weight and light fittings, not the constant pulling of curtains being opened and closed. Over time, screws fixed only into the board loosen, the track sags and the ceiling can crack around the fixings — especially with heavy blackout curtains or motorised tracks.

Option 1: A batten above the board

The ceiling contractor fixes a strip of plywood or timber above the gypsum, running along the line where the track will go. The track then screws through the gypsum straight into the batten. It is cheap and quick during construction, and it gives a rock-solid fixing.

For a double track, make the batten wide enough for both tracks. For motorised tracks, extend it to support the motor end.

Option 2: Fixing through to the slab

Where the gap between the false ceiling and the slab is small, long anchors or threaded rods can pass through the board into the concrete above. It works, but it needs care to keep the track level and to avoid cracking the board.

Option 3: A recessed curtain pocket

A recessed pocket is a groove or channel formed in the false ceiling along the window wall. The track sits inside it, so only the curtain is visible — a very clean, hotel-like look. The pocket must be designed wide enough for the track (or tracks) and the curtain folds, and deep enough for any motor. Agree its size with your track supplier before the ceiling contractor builds it.

Coordinating with your ceiling contractor

  1. Mark the track line on the drawings and on site — distance from the wall and full length.
  2. Decide single or double tracks so the batten or pocket is wide enough.
  3. Plan the motor position and power point for motorised tracks.
  4. Keep cove lights and light troughs clear of the curtain line, or they'll cast odd shadows.
  5. Check AC positions — air blowing directly onto curtains makes them sway.

If the false ceiling is already finished

  • The installer may be able to locate the metal framing and fix into it for light curtains.
  • Specialised cavity anchors can hold light loads but are not ideal for heavy curtains.
  • A small section of the ceiling can be opened, a batten fitted, and the board patched and repainted.
  • Alternatively, switch to a wall-mounted track fixed to solid masonry above the window.

POP ceilings

POP ceilings are similar: a thin plaster layer over a frame. Treat them like gypsum and fix into a batten, the frame or the slab — never into the plaster alone.

What it costs

The track itself costs ₹140 to ₹450 per running foot at Akhil Interior, including installation. A 12 ft double track (24 running feet) costs about ₹3,360 to ₹10,800. Battens installed during construction are part of the ceiling work; adding reinforcement to a finished ceiling is quoted separately. Frequently asked questions

Can a gypsum false ceiling hold a curtain track?

Not on its own. The track should be fixed into a wooden or plywood batten above the gypsum, or anchored through to the concrete slab.

What is a curtain batten?

It is a strip of plywood or timber fixed above the false ceiling along the track line, giving the curtain track screws something solid to grip.

How big should a curtain pocket in a false ceiling be?

Wide enough for the track or tracks plus the curtain folds, and deep enough for any motor. Agree the exact size with your track supplier before the ceiling is built.

What if my false ceiling is already finished?

The installer can fix into the ceiling frame, use cavity anchors for light curtains, open and patch a section to add a batten, or mount the track on the wall instead.
